Book Report Time

File_000 (126)Raise your hand if you have time to read one nonschool book this week?  No, you probably don’t because you have a job, kids, a life!  This week, I’ve got you covered.  I read Woman Code by Alissa Vitti and it was so fascinating that I just have to share the highlights.  I picked the book up for 2 reasons:

1.) I have suffered from endometriosis in the past and had to have a procedure done to cure it.  The hormones that caused it still wreak havoc on my body.  Almost every woman I know, including me, suffers from some type of hormone induced issue such as depression, anxiety, migraines, and fatigue.  I take medicine now to balance everything out, but I don’t want to stay on it forever.  I read this book to learn how to regulate my hormones the natural way.

2.) I have an 11-year-old daughter who is by nature a moody little thing.  Soon she will have PMS and my whole house is terrified.  I want to do whatever I can to ease her symptoms.  I hope she never has to go through what I went through with hormones, so I am educating myself in order to pass it on to her.

Woman Code was written by Alisa Vitti who, after a diagnosis of PCOS in college, did not want to accept her doctor’s response of “there is no cure”.  Instead, she spent years researching the endocrine system and how it works, then how to treat her symptoms through nontraditional medicines and diet.  She actually cured her PCOS and her main goal with this book and her practice is to help women improve their lives by balancing their hormones.

First, Alisa explains the endocrine system which is the system that is made up of organs and glands that send messages to one another via hormones.  It basically runs your life because it regulates hormones and dictates every aspect of your behavior and physical and mental activity from your health, to your thoughts, to your mood, and so much more. (pg. 56)

There are 3 main categories this book addresses: menstruation, fertility, and libido.  The quality of these 3 put together is referred to as FLO by Alisa.  She goes on to list FLO blockers, or what is getting in the way of these things working the way they were intended.  The blockers are:

  1. Misinformation about your hormones – Our bodies are complicated for sure.  She explains that most women feel helpless when it comes to hormonal issues and that we assume it is part of being a woman.  We actually don’t have to live in misery though!
  2. Cultural Conditioning – Similar to #1, we are constantly bombarded with images in the media that DO NOT depict real women and we end up being ashamed of our bodies.  We need truly healthy role models.
  3. Our toxic environment and lifestyle – This was the biggest eye opener for me.  We are exposed to so many toxic chemicals in our water, soil, food, air, and products we buy.  It’s overwhelming actually.  Daily stress is another disruptor of the endocrine system.  Simply put, our bodies are having a difficult time filtering out the bad stuff because they are so overwhelmed with toxic chemicals.  To help with this, there is a chart on pg. 38 that lists what to avoid in products you buy.  ***More on this below***
  4. Our modern diet and the desire for quick-fix solutions to heal our bodies – I am so guilty on this one.  There is so much information out there that it is hard to know what to eat.  One week carbs are bad and the next you should eat carbs daily.  Also, we use medications to solve all of our problems.  Again, guilty.  This book explains that certain foods help or hinder your endocrine system.  Organic is always best, but even that can be confusing.

So how do we take action and help our hormones?  She created a 5 step protocol to address the underlying causes of hormonal problems and to support the endocrine system so your hormones can work in a healthy, balanced way. (pg. 24)

  1. Stabilize your blood sugar – This is BIG.  Lots of info.  Stabilizing blood sugar is not done without some serious thought put into it.  It is necessary for your body to function properly though.  The endocrine system sends glucose to your brain, muscles, and heart.  If anything goes wrong in that process (too much or too little glucose), your hormones get out of whack.  The book does not mention this, but I know Plexus Slim is made to stabilize blood sugar.  After reading this, I realize why and how Plexus works.  Yes, you can stabilize your blood sugar through diet, but it is a lot easier to do it with Plexus.  (And no I don’t sell it, but you can buy it from my friend Vanessa)file_000-54
  2. Nurture your adrenal glands – The amount of stress we deal with in our daily lives in this busy world is more than our bodies are equipped to handle without taking breaks.  We have to take the time to slow down and rest or huge problems occur like fatigue, acne, weight gain, and a compromised immune system.  Our adrenals are meant to alert our bodies to life-threatening dangers so we can react (fight or flight), so when we are constantly bombarded with stressors and our hormones can’t decipher between life-threatening or not, our adrenals are exhausted.
  3. Support your organs of elimination – This is the yucky part no one wants to discuss.  We will call it digestion.  It all starts in your liver and large intestine.  Your liver is supposed to convert fat-soluble toxins to water-soluble toxins that exit your body through sweat, urine, and BMs.  After the liver, toxins go into your large intestines.  If these toxins sit too long in your large intestines (constipation), they seep through the lining of your intestines into your bloodstream.  Then you have problems that present themselves in all different ways.  Skin is another organ of elimination and when you see blemishes, they are caused by elimination issues on the inside.
  4. Syncing with your menstrual cycle – There is an entire chapter about your cycle where I learned that there are actually 4 phases involved.  Instead of explaining this section of the book, I highly recommend getting the new APP the author created to track your cycle.  It’s called FLO and it is free.  This is especially helpful if you are trying to get pregnant.File_000 (127)
  5. Engage your feminine energy –  This part is all about feminine and masculine energy.  These exist in all of us and we have to find a way to balance them out.

A Few Crazy Facts I Learned in Woman Code

-Women absorb almost 5 lbs. of chemicals into their bodies each year through make-up.

-Cosmetic products are not subject to FDA approval.

-These products are the most offending endocrine disruptors: nail polish, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, conditioner, foundation, skin cream, facial masks, soap, hairspray, talc, shaving cream, petroleum jelly and lip products.  Start here when trying to switch to natural products.

-Every 7 years, your cells regenerate so what you do to your body today and what you eat WILL affect you in the future.

-Being on the Pill for some women kills their libido.

-The reason your body sometimes will hold onto the last 5-15 lbs. no matter how little you eat or how much you exercise has to do with your liver.  The liver is supposed to remove toxins from your body, but if it is having trouble doing its job your body will put those toxins in fat cells.  Then your body doesn’t want to let go of the toxins because it knows that they shouldn’t be roaming around freely.  The way to get rid of it is by getting your liver to work efficiently.

Suggestions I’ve Tried After Reading Woman Code

-Drink a glass of water right after you wake up to help with digestion

-Jump on a mini trampoline for a few minutes each day to help your lymphatic system

-Check your products and buy natural.  I started small because I don’t have the money to just throw everything out and buy all new products.  I started with deodorant, body wash, and Lysol spray.  I bought Tom’s deodorant and Myer’s products because there isn’t a huge price difference.File_000 (130)

-Buying organic fruit.  I started shopping at Sprouts and buying as many organic fruits and veggies as I can affordably purchase.  I started with the Woman Code’s list of essential organics like strawberries, apples, and blueberries.

-Get the FLO App for free to track your monthly cycle.

-Follow FLO Living on Facebook for updates almost daily.

-Make lunch the largest meal of the day instead of dinner.

-Exfoliate a few times per week to remove the layers of dead skin cells that prevent pores from releasing toxins.
